► FEATURED AUTHOR: KAT MELLON

Kat Mellon is a young author from New Mexico and the founder of YearNoWriMad.

1. Tell us about your novels and your current word counts.

CREATION: I went into 2012 with 8,093 words and wrote 12,832 during YearNoWriMad, bringing my grand total to a little over 20,000. Creation is currently available for .99 on Amazon.

FWYD: I actually started writing this book during my sophomore year of High School. YearNoWriMad helped me renew my efforts by stamping out an additional 27,891 words. After NaNoWriMo and several rounds of edits, Flowers When You're Dead is sitting pretty at 76,000 words.

2. Would you have come this far without YearNoWriMad? If not, what aspect(s) of YearNoWriMad drove you to get 'er done?

Hell no! I thrive on competition, and when that's gone, I'm toast. Creation would not have been written if it weren't for YearNoWriMad, and boy is it weird to imagine my world without that manuscript.   Anyway, what I really love about YearNoWriMad is the thrill of updating my word count...and having it be higher than everyone else's. (Case in point: I knocked out 100K+ during last year's NaNoWriMo!)

3. What aspect of YearNoWriMad did you find most rewarding?

I found that YearNoWriMad really pushed me to adopt a writing schedule. I learned that I need to write first thing in the morning, and doing so was what allowed me to finish Creation. I've fallen out of the habit and I'm paying dearly for it!

4. What is your word count goal for 2013?

200,000. I fell short last year (141,641 being my grand total for 2012), but I'm determined to step up my game this time around. I've already squandered these first few months of the new year, so I have some SERIOUS catching up to do! (Also: I intend to try writing 50K in a day. More on that later!)
