► AN UNDERWHELMING INTERVIEW WITH THE SNARKY TECH GUY

Mike is the behind-the-scenes guy for YearNoWriMad. When he's not providing lackluster answers to my interview questions, he enjoys watching an assortment of bad sci-fi shows and drowning potstickers in ranch dressing.

1. What feature of YearNoWriMad are you the most stoked about sharing with the novel-writing public?

Hmm... probably the automatic novel-writing feature.

2. What has been your most frustrating obstacle in developing the YearNoWriMad site thus far?

Having lots of projects to work on, it can be difficult to allocate time between them evenly. There's always something else I could be working on or doing, so it can be challenging to manage my time effectively.

3. Why did you decide to take on the task of building YearNoWriMad from the ground up?

Three words. :-) Plus, it's fun to learn new things. There have been a number of recent interesting developments in "web development" -- big players like google, twitter, & facebook have shared some pretty cool building blocks with the internet community, which I'm finding very useful as I develop the site (using twitter bootstrap, google's angularJS, and the various facebook APIs). It's been fun so far, and hopefully will continue to be so as I continue to attempt to bring Kat's vision to life.

4. Kat wants you to try and write 600 words of a novel. Do you intend to set up a YearNoWriMad page and make her wish come true?

 Nope.

► THE ORIGINAL YEARNOWRIMAD

I mentioned on our About page that YearNoWriMad began as a group on my acting website, User Based Casting. I founded the group on December 1st of 2011 and gave it a facelift sometime last year. Although I neglected to take any screenshots of the true original "home" area (GRR!), I would nevertheless love to show you all how YearNoWriMad got its start.

HOME AREA

This was the re-designed home area of the original YearNoWriMad group. There's a book cover widget, a suggested word count calendar, links to tips and tricks, and a drop-down list of participants.

► FEATURED AUTHOR: PHIL N. SCHIPPER

Phil N. Schipper is a 20-year-old author and the founder of the Obscure Authors Alliance. His sci-fi novel The Third Face is set for an April 2013 re-release. You can stalk through Phil's excellent posts about publishing and authorhood at ephixbooks.wordpress.com.

1. What is your personal challenge for YearNoWriMad 2013?

Since my first novel is launching in the beginning of April, my goal is to also self-publish the second one this year.

2. What obstacles will you most likely face along the way? How will you expertly combat them?

Well, the first book took me about 3 or 4 years to get to this point, and though I do know the beginning and the end of the second book, I haven't planned anything else or written a single word of it. This means that I'll have to go through writing the first draft, all of my editing cycles (probably at least 6 or 7 including others' help) and finally format and get it ready in only 8 months' time. And it's actually more like 7 months because I'm not giving up NaNoWriMo to accomplish this! It's a lot to do, and I'm not exactly known for keeping up productivity for a long span of time. I also have work and college to manage.
